Elizabeth More Bretton Scholarship

This renewable scholarship was established to support a freshman with a strong academic record dedicated to pursue medical school upon graduation from SUNY Brockport.

Eligible freshman must:

  • have been accepted for admission as an incoming, first time freshman into any academic program,
  • apply in their first year of study – the application includes a personal statement of the applicant’s motivation to become a physician, relevant experiences in the medical system, participation in service activities, leadership roles,
  • possess a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the end of their first year,
  • successfully complete BIO 201 & BIO 202 and CHM 205 and CHM 206 by end of freshman year,
  • be registered for two of the following courses in the fall semester of their sophomore year – BIO 302, CHM 305, and PHS 205 or PHS 235.
    The scholarship will not be awarded until freshman year grades are posted. Should the student be no longer eligible for this scholarship, eligible rising sophomores will be considered by the Pre-Professional Health Program.

Sophomore recipients remain eligible by:

  • successfully complete their second year of study with a minimum 3.5 GPA (for the year),
  • successfully complete at least four of the following courses: BIO 301 and 302, CHM 305 and 306, and PHS 205 or 235 & 210 or 240,
  • successfully complete sufficient credit hours to be on track for graduation at the completion of four years of study at SUNY Brockport,
  • being registered for recommended courses required for medical school in their junior year.
    The scholarship will not be awarded until sophomore year grades are posted. Should the student be no longer eligible for this scholarship, eligible rising juniors will be considered by the Pre-Professional Health Program.

Junior recipients remain eligible by:

  • successfully complete their third year of study with a minimum 3.5 GPA (for the year),
  • successfully complete sufficient credit hours to be on track for graduation at the completion of four years of study at SUNY Brockport,
  • being registered for recommended courses required for medical school in their senior year.

Upon three years of successful study, the Elizabeth More Bretton Scholar will, during their senior year of study, also receive the Henry L. Bretton & Marian More Bretton Scholarship in addition to the Elizabeth More Bretton Scholarship.

The financial assistance is in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant that may be used to cover educational costs such as room, board or college fees. The award will be credited to the recipient’s bill during the semester(s) of the award period. The student must use this award for educational expenses at the College and may not receive the award in cash.
