Blaine M. DeLancey Memorial Scholarship
The English department at SUNY Brockport established the Blaine M. DeLancey Memorial Award to honor the memory of Dr. DeLancey, Professor of English at Brockport from 1934 to 1967. He was born in West Virginia in 1901 and passed away in Brockport in 1975.
Dr. DeLancey joined the college’s faculty in 1934 and became chair of the English Department the next year. He was involved with student activities, serving as an advisor to The Stylus and director of student productions in the 1930s and early 1940s.
As Registrar for the College in 1942, he anticipated the need for an accelerated academic program that would allow high school graduates to complete their degrees as fast as possible so they could take part in the war effort. After the war in 1947, Dr. DeLancey pointed out that while state teachers colleges across the country had lost 18 percent of their student populations, Brockport’s student count was up by 22 percent.
This scholarship recognizes a graduate or undergraduate major in the Department of English, who has written the best essay on a particular topic as determined by the department faculty.
