Donald J. and Julie McWherter Scholarship
Donald J. McWherter spent 35 years at SUNY Brockport, rising from assistant professor in 1957 to full professor in 1972, and earning both Distinguished Professor status and a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was elected to the Brockport School Board in 1989 and received the Outstanding Service Award from the Brockport Alumni Association upon his retirement in 1991. He passed away in 1992.
After her husband’s passing, Julie McWherter joined Academic Advisement, working at the reception desk where she was known for her kindness, greeting visitors and training student employees in customer service. Each holiday season she made more than 5,000 cookies to share with friends and colleagues at Brockport. She also established a support group for Brockport widows. Mrs. McWherter passed away in 2010.
The Donald J. and Julie McWherter Scholarship recognizes a student enrolled in the political science or criminal justice pre-law advisement program, intending to pursue a career in the legal profession. Applicants must have demonstrated their professional commitment through community service, their academic records, and their co-curricular activities at Brockport. Applicants must have GPAs of 3.25 or better, have completed at least two semesters of study at The College at Brockport, and have at least two semesters remaining. Applicants who are 25 years or older will receive preference.
