Dr. and Mrs. Herbert S. (Inez W.) Bailey Scholarship
A 1936 graduate of the Albany State Teachers College, Dr. Herbert S. Bailey taught high school mathematics before World War II. During the war, he was a communications and deck officer on the USS Naos. The ship delivered supplies and troops around the South Pacific, returning to San Francisco in October 1945.
After the war, Dr. Bailey earned his doctorate degree at Syracuse University and joined the science and math department faculty at SUNY Brockport in 1950. In 1956, he became chair of the Department of Physics, a role he held until his retirement in 1978. From 1958 to 1960, Dr. Bailey, his wife, and two daughters traveled to Indonesia, where he participated in a joint educational program with SUNY, the Ford Foundation, and the Universitas Airlangga.
Following his retirement, Dr. Bailey and his wife, Inez, established their scholarship to recognize an outstanding current undergraduate student in either biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. Candidates must have completed at least 30 hours at Brockport, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
