Edward J. Gafney and Ruth Bauer Gafney Washington Internship Award
Edward J. Gafney of Philadelphia and Ruth Bauer Gafney of Rochester, NY, met in Washington, DC, during World War II. He was in the U.S. Army, and she worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. After the war, the two married in Rochester, where they made their home.
Mr. Gafney was an architect, who taught drafting in night school throughout his career. Mrs. Gafney was a homemaker who managed the couple’s investments. Travel throughout Europe, East Asia, and South America showed them the value of learning in the larger world. Although they had no children of their own, they encouraged education on the part of their nieces and nephews.
Curtis J. Hill established this internship at The College at Brockport to recognize the couple’s foresight and generosity.
