Edward O. and Arline Stephany Award

Dr. Edward O. Stephany joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at SUNY Brockport in 1947 after more than five years of active duty with the Marine Corps during World War II. He taught at Brockport for 33 years, serving as chair of the math department for 29 of those years. In 1965-66, he served as president of the Faculty Council, and he was named a professor emeritus when he retired in 1980. He passed away in 2006.

He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve. He earned his master’s degree at the University of Rochester in 1938. Then he attended Cornell University on a work-study program to earn his doctorate.

During World War II, he took part in the later landings at Guadalcanal, the invasion of the Marshall Islands and in the Marine Corps operation that landed on Okinawa in 1945. Dr. Stephany remained in the reserves, retiring in 1976 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Dr. Stephany, his wife Arline, and friends and faculty members from the College established this scholarship to recognize an outstanding student in the Department of Mathematics. In 2019, the name was changed to include Mrs. Arline Stephany in honor of her 100th birthday.

Students eligible for this award must be accepted into the Department of Mathematics at the undergraduate level. They must demonstrate academic excellence and a high quality of work in mathematics through learning activities outside the classroom, including national exams, contests, and summer institutes. Students must also have at least one semester of study remaining at Brockport as a mathematics major.
