Eugene F. Orbacker Scholarship for Teacher Education in Physical Education
Dr. Eugene F. Orbaker established the scholarship in his name at SUNY Brockport to recognize deserving students who are planning a career in teaching physical education.
A member of the Class of 1953, Dr. Orbaker was named as an All-American in soccer while in school. He later served on the faculty of the Department of Education and Sport from 1958 to 1995, when he retired with status as associate professor emeritus.
After his graduation from Brockport, he earned his master’s degree from Hofstra University in 1958 and his doctoral degree from the University of West Virginia in 1972.
During his time on the faculty, Dr. Orbaker also coached soccer from 1958 to 1985. In 1983, he started the Brockport women’s soccer team and led them to a 12-1-1 record during their first season. In 1986, he was inducted into the College’s Golden Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame, which honors those who contributed to Brockport’s athletic program through participation as athletes, coaches, or administrators.
To qualify, students must be accepted into the Physical Education Teacher Education program in Brockport’s Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education. They must demonstrate a commitment to a teaching career and financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference will go to a married male student over the age of 25 years of age who is pursuing teacher certification. Secondary preference will go to a student with children.
