Frances Moroney Whited Award
This scholarship honors Dr. Frances Moroney Whited, charter member and past president (1962-64) of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators. The Moroney Whited Award recognizes a third-year student in the Katharine M. Reichel strand of scholarships. The Reichel scholarships are four consecutive annual awards offered at SUNY Brockport to women intending to pursue a career in education.
Dr. Moroney Whited was a founder of the Reading Teacher Master’s Program, now the Literacy Program, in the Department of Education and Human Development at Brockport. With her master’s degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC, and a doctoral degree from Penn State University, she focused her research on improving literacy, and she displayed a dedication to quality education.
Named a professor emerita by the college, she was honored as A Woman of Distinction by Pi State, the New York State region of Delta Kappa Gamma, in 2005. That year, she also received recognition from the New York State Board of Regents for her many contributions to education and her community. Dr. Moroney Whited passed away in 2015.
To be eligible for the Frances Moroney Whited Award, a student must first have received the Katharine M. Reichel Award and the Dorothy E. Foster Award. In addition, the student must continue to prepare for a career in education while demonstrating leadership qualities, outstanding academic ability, and the potential for success in education.
