Frances Moroney Whited Reading Scholarship
A founder of the Reading Teacher Master’s Program, now the Literacy Program, in the Department of Education and Human Development at SUNY Brockport, Dr. Frances Moroney Whited set a professional standard for her leadership and dedication to quality education.
She served as a mentor and role model for students, teachers, and administrators, exemplifying outstanding service to education and literacy. In 2005, the New York State Board of Regents recognized her for her many contributions to education and her community.
A charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators, she served as president of the organization’s Alpha Alpha Chapter from 1962-64. In 2005, the Pi State (New York region) of Delta Kappa Gamma named her A Woman of Distinction. The College awarded her the Professor Emerita designation when she retired in 1985.
Dr. Moroney Whited and her husband Dr. Clark V. Whited, former men’s baseball coach and chair of men’s physical education, were long-time supporters of Brockport students through attendance at sporting events, involvement with student professional activities, and creation of scholarships. Dr. Clark Whited passed away in 2005. Dr. Moroney Whited passed away in 2015.
The Frances Moroney Whited Reading Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in the Department of Education and Human Development who demonstrates the potential for excellence in teaching literacy in an elementary classroom. To qualify for this scholarship, students must be accepted into the Childhood Certification program, demonstrate academic excellence, and exhibit a commitment to teaching literacy.
