Fred Dean Scholarship
Frederick E. Dean ’60 served as an educator with the Greece (NY) Central School District from 1960 to 1992, retiring as principal at the English Village School.
One of nine children, Mr. Dean grew up in Greece. After graduation from high school, he married and began working at Eastman Kodak Company while studying for his undergraduate degree at SUNY Brockport. He was the first Greece Central School District graduate to become an administrator in that district.
During his time with Greece schools, Mr. Dean worked with Brockport faculty member Marguerite Hare Browne to establish the Greece Central School District/The College at Brockport Teaching Center. The Greece Teaching Center provided benefits for Brockport students, as well as the students and teachers in the Greece Central School District.
After Mrs. Browne retired from teaching at the College in 1985, Mr. Dean helped establish the awards program in her honor, initiating the Marguerite Hare Browne Professional Education Awards and Scholarship Program. He served as chair of the MHBPEA&S committee for many years before he passed away in 2006. The Fred Dean Scholarship in his memory is part of the MHBPEA&S.
The Fred Dean Scholarship recognizes a second-year student in the Marguerite Hare Browne strand of scholarships. The Marguerite Hare Browne scholarships are four consecutive annual awards to students intending to pursue a career in education. To qualify for the Fred Dean Scholarship, a student must first have received the Marguerite Hare Browne High School Senior Award. In addition, the student must continue to prepare for a career in education, demonstrate strong leadership qualities, and maintain an excellent academic record.
