George and Mary Bauer Scholarships -- Married Student, Early Childood, Transfer, Study-Abroad
The year 2019 marked the 60th wedding anniversary of George ’63 and Mary Lamonica ’56 Bauer, both teachers who established their scholarships to give back to SUNY Brockport.
The couple met in 1956 when Mr. Bauer was working at the Genesee Settlement House in Rochester and Mary Lamonica was a volunteer. They married three years later. As newlyweds, Mr. Bauer was on active duty with the U.S. Army at the Yuma (AZ) Test Station, and Mrs. Bauer taught in Yuma during the 1959-1960 academic year.
In the summer of 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Bauer returned to Rochester and bought a home, where they raised their six children, and where continue to live today. Also that summer, Mr. Bauer entered Brockport’s Intensive Teacher Training Program, beginning his career in education.
Brockport and the teaching profession have played a central role in the couple’s lives. Mrs. Bauer has said that she loves teaching and is grateful to Brockport for opening so many doors. Mr. Bauer has noted that without support from Brockport, he would not have been able to complete his master’s degree.
Both agree that they want to make it possible for other students to have what they have. To accomplish that goal, the couple has established the following scholarship awards:
The George and Mary Bauer Scholarship recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled in a Teacher Certification Program, married and a full- or part-time student in good standing.
The George and Mary Bauer Early Childhood Education Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in the Childhood Inclusive Teacher Certification Program who has a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a commitment to early childhood education.
The George and Mary Bauer Transfer Scholarship recognizes an incoming transfer student with a degree from Monroe Community College who also is a graduate of any high school in the Rochester City School District.
The George and Mary Bauer Study-Abroad Scholarship recognizes a graduate or undergraduate student in good standing who is accepted into one of the College’s international education program sites.
