George S. Queen History Award
Dr. George S. Queen spent 33 years in teaching, first in rural schools in Illinois and his last 24 years at SUNY Brockport.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University and his master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois. His specialty was Russian history and his dissertation – The United States and the Material Advance in Russia 1881-1906 – was published by Arno Press, a New York Times Company. A copy was purchased for students at the University of Moscow. He also contributed articles on his specialty for publication in scholarly journals.
At Brockport, Dr. Queen helped found the History Forum to enrich classroom teaching. He also served as a founding member of the Western New York Historical Society based at the Morgan-Manning House in Brockport. Just one year after his retirement, he received a professor emeritus designation for his service, preparation, and reputation among history graduates as an exceptionally fine teacher. He passed away in 1987.
At the end of his career, Dr. Queen noted that Brockport had given him the chance to do what he wanted to do: train better teachers.
To qualify for the George S. Queen History Award, students must be full-time undergraduate or graduate history majors at The College at Brockport. The faculty of the Department of History selects this recipient.
