Henry Gould Award

Henry Gould Award

From 1943 to 1973, Dr. Henry Gould was a member of the faculty at SUNY Brockport. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at New York University, and began his tenure as an assistant professor of science. In 1949, after he earned his PhD in biology from the same university, he became a full professor.

In addition to his teaching at Brockport, Dr. Gould taught evening classes for returning veterans who wanted to complete requirements for their high school diplomas. During his tenure at Brockport, he served on the Admissions Committee, the All-College English Committee, and the Press Bureau. He also was the author of articles on science for The Instructor magazine.

Dr. Gould and his wife Maddie (Matilda) enjoyed international travel. In the early 1960s, Dr. Gould was invited to serve for a year at the Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro as a Fulbright Scholar. He worked with the headmaster Gilbert C. Brown and the school’s science faculty. He encouraged a Brazilian member of the faculty to attend a summer session at Brockport to study science and curriculum.

That summer session led to a more formal collaborative exchange program with the Escola Americana. Building on the success of the joint program in Rio de Janeiro, Brockport’s Department of Education and Human Development also established teaching centers in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Lisbon, Portugal. The collaborative relationships between Brockport and the international schools lasted for nearly 20 years.

The Henry Gould Award recognizes an outstanding junior student majoring in biology who is planning a career in teaching. Qualified applicants will have at least a 3.0 GPA in biology courses, and have completed at least 12 credit hours in biology at The College at Brockport.
