James E. Fatula, PhD, Memorial Scholarship
Dr. James E. Fatula enjoyed a long career in health care before joining the master’s in public administration program at SUNY Brockport, first in 1992 as an adjunct professor and then in 1998 as a professor. He also served as department chair from 2001 to 2010.
The public administration program thrived under his leadership. He recruited an excellent faculty, positioned the program for a successful re-accreditation, and gave generously of his time through service to Brockport. He was the author of articles on health care, social services, and non-profit management, serving as an expert commentator for WXXI, The Rochester Business Journal, and The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.
Prior to joining Brockport, he worked with the New York State Office of Health Systems Management, the Rochester Area Hospitals Corporation, and the Monroe County Medigap Plan Commission.
Dr. Fatula volunteered in the community as well. He assisted the United Way of Greater Rochester in strategic planning and non-profit sustainability, and he worked with the Golisano Foundation on a policy paper on Medicaid funding for those with developmental disabilities. His other volunteer work included support for the Children’s Institute, the Rochester Area Community Foundation, and the Finger Lakes Health System Agency.
He earned his PhD in philosophy in ethics and public policy from Fordham University in 1985. In 2007, he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Fatula passed away in 2011.
Qualified applicants for the James E. Fatula Memorial Scholarship are accepted graduate students in the master of public administration program.
