Joan C. Young Scholarship
The late Mrs. Joan Kelly Fish Young ’53/’57 established the scholarship in her name to recognize a deserving student from Long Island, NY, who is in the Teacher Certification Program at SUNY Brockport. Mrs. Young, a retired teacher, worked many jobs to support herself while an undergraduate student at the Brockport, and considered herself a lifelong resident of Long Island.
After their graduations, she and her first husband, Eugene C. Fish, taught for several years at the U.S. Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe. When they returned to the United States, the couple embarked on a cross-country tour. While traveling, the couple was involved in a severe accident in which Mr. Fish died.
Mrs. Young returned to Brockport as residence hall director at one of the new women’s dorms for two years. She then returned to Long Island, and enjoyed a successful career as an educator.
This scholarship is the second endowed by Mrs. Young, who previously established the Eugene C. Fish ’54 Scholarship in memory of her first husband. Mrs. Young passed away in 2010.
