Jocelyn A. Reed Memorial Award
Cynthia Powell-Reed established the Jocelyn A. Reed Memorial Award in memory of her daughter, who was a student at SUNY Brockport.
Jocelyn Angelique Reed was a bright, active, and rambunctious little girl. She always had a smiling face, and making friends came naturally. Her vibrant personality would fill any space that she entered with light. She was a brilliant ray of sunshine. Everyone who crossed her path can attest to her infectious sense of humor, the ability to make others smile, and her passion for life. Jocelyn had an undeniable work ethic and always did more than anyone expected of her. She was inquisitive and adventurous; she tried everything from playing lacrosse and basketball to performing dance on pointe.
Jocelyn’s love of the arts was innate, a blessing, and seemingly the essence of her soul. To watch her dance was breath-taking, and with each performance, she left her audience in awe. On the dance floor, in the classroom, and in the quiet of her bedroom she was always there for those she cared about. Her warm and comforting spirit was a blessing. With words of love, encouragement, and kindness, she was able to help others in need. She was often that pillar of strength for someone else to lean on.
At Brockport, Jocelyn thrived as a student during her first two years with a double major in dance and exercise science. In testimony of her tenacity and strong work ethic, she amazingly was able to balance her academic life with her active social life. Her lifetime goal was to become a physical therapist, where she would continue to help those in need.
After she passed away in 2016, her mother established this scholarship in Jocelyn’s name to recognize a graduating senior receiving a degree in dance or in exercise science with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, demonstrating the potential for excellence in a career in dance or in physical therapy. Applicants who are double majors in dance and exercise science, members of an under represented group, or demonstrating a commitment to a career in physical therapy will receive preference.
