John R. and Kathleen A. Halstead Scholarship
Established by a gift from Dr. John Halstead, sixth president of SUNY Brockport, and his wife Kathleen, a tireless volunteer on behalf of the college and community, this scholarship recognizes an incoming freshman student who demonstrates strong academic and leadership skills.
Dr. Halstead came to the presidency at Brockport in 2005 from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania, where he served as president from 1998 to 2005. His previous academic roles were in student affairs at such schools as Michigan State University, College of the Holy Cross, The Ohio State University, Gonzaga University, and the University of Maine.
A native of Cortland, NY, he earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology at Colgate University in 1970, his master’s degree in student personnel administration from Michigan State University in 1972, and his doctoral degree in student personnel administration from The Ohio State University. Before beginning his academic career, Dr. Halstead interned with IBM for two summers.
Dr. and Mrs. Halstead share an interest in community service. They worked together to build awareness for Brockport, its programs, and its students across the community and region. Mrs. Halstead received the Brockport Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2014 for her many contributions to the College and its students.
Qualified candidates for the John R. and Kathleen A. Halstead Scholarship are incoming freshmen who are regularly admitted students, have demonstrated academic excellence, and exhibit leadership skills through school or community activities. Preference will go to a first-generation college student.
