Mareus Family International Scholarship

Mareus Family International Scholarship

Dr. Roosevelt Mareus ’04 and his family established a scholarship to assist a SUNY Brockport undergraduate student, whose permanent residence is outside the United States, by supporting their studies at the college.

A native of Haiti, Dr. Mareus immigrated to the United States in 1985. In 1999, he joined the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center (REOC) as a security officer, and began completing his bachelor’s degree in business administration at Brockport, which he earned in 2004. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Strategic Leadership in 2008, and a PhD degree from the School of Business and Leadership at Regent University in 2018.

While working on his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Dr. Mareus continued work at REOC, part of the statewide network of Educational Opportunity Centers and Outreach and Counseling Centers. REOC has a nearly 50-year affiliation with Brockport and has pioneered innovative academic, remedial, and vocational programs that lead to higher education or gainful employment. In 2011, Dr. Mareus was named interim executive director for REOC, and in 2012, following a nationwide search, he was named Dean/Executive Director of the Brockport-affiliated program.

Dr. Mareus serves the greater Rochester community as a vice chair of Downtown Definitely and as a member of the Workforce Development Board RochesterWorks!, having established relationships among the Brockport Campus, Rochester-area colleges, and the Greater Rochester Community as well as business and industrial organizations. He also serves as president of Elevate Haiti Mission, a not-for-profit that assists underserved and undereducated youth in Haiti.

He was keynote speaker at the 2015 Rebuilding Haiti Conference in Port-au-Prince and the principal author of the paper, “Exploring Servant Leadership in a Top-Down Organization,” published in the spring 2019 issue of Servant Leadership: Theory and Practice.

Applicants for the Mareus Family International Scholarship must submit a one- to two-page essay describing their love of learning, commitment to higher education, participation in community or charitable service, either at the College or in the larger community, and intended career plans.
