Michael Weaver Washinton Semester Award
The Department of Political Science and International Studies recognized emeritus professor Michael Weaver after his retirement by establishing the Michael Weaver Washington Semester Award to provide financial assistance for outstanding students selected to participate in the Washington Semester Program of SUNY Brockport.
A faculty member in the political science department, Mr. Weaver established the Washington internship program in 1968 with the first students arriving in fall 1969. He remained in Washington directing the program until his retirement in 1995. When Mr. Weaver initiated Brockport’s Washington Semester Program, it was the first of its kind in the country. During the first 45 year of Brockport’s Washington Semester Program, 700 Brockport students and more than 3,000 total students from all participating schools took part.
Mr. Weaver came to Brockport in 1959 as a political science faculty member. He taught American Government, Advanced Economics, and freshman Economics. He also served as an advisor to the College’s mock senate.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Dakota.
Candidates for the Michael Weaver Washington Semester Award must be selected to participate in the Washington program. They also must have junior or senior status at the time of participation in the program, have completed at least 12 hours of political science or international studies coursework prior to participation, must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and must demonstrate effective communication skills.
