OSAD (Organization for Students of African Descent) Scholarship
Alumni from the Organization for Students of African Descent established a scholarship for student members of the organization at SUNY Brockport in 2011, and fully endowed the award in 2015. The OSAD Scholarship recognizes an outstanding member of OSAD at the college.
Brockport’s minority students established OSAD in 1979 to advocate for the specific concerns of students of African ancestry at Brockport and to encourage education as a critical component in the struggle for human rights. OSAD replaced the Black Student Liberation Front, established in the 1960s to advocate for civil rights.
Qualified applicants for the OSAD Scholarship must have completed at least one year at Brockport and be active members of the OSAD organization. An active member is a student who attends at least three OSAD general body meetings and participates in at least two OSAD-sponsored events per academic year. Applicants also must demonstrate academic excellence as evidenced by a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and must submit a one-to-two-page essay describing their love of learning, commitment to higher education, participation in community of charitable service, and intended career plans.
