President John R. and Mrs. Kathleen A. Halstead
Dr. John R. Halstead, former president of SUNY Brockport, and his wife, Kathleen A. Halstead, have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to higher education, student development, and service to both campus and community.
Dr. Halstead served as the sixth president of SUNY Brockport from 2005 until his retirement in 2015. During his tenure, he focused on increasing awareness of Brockport’s academic quality and student success throughout the region and strengthening the institution’s connection to the broader community. Under his leadership, the College completed major capital projects, including the townhomes, the Special Events Recreation Center, and the Liberal Arts Building, facilities that continue to enhance student life and academic excellence. He also launched and successfully completed a $26 million comprehensive campaign that expanded philanthropic support for the College.
Before coming to Brockport, Dr. Halstead built a distinguished career in student affairs and higher education leadership. He served as president of Mansfield University in Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2005 and previously held senior student affairs roles at the University of Maine, Gonzaga University, The Ohio State University, the College of the Holy Cross, Boston University, and Michigan State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Colgate University, his master’s degree in student personnel administration from Michigan State University, and his doctoral degree in student personnel administration from The Ohio State University. Early in his career, he also interned with IBM, providing a foundation for his future leadership roles.
Dr. Halstead’s contributions have been recognized throughout his career. He received the Faculty Appreciation Award from students at Gonzaga University in 1981 and was honored in 2001 with The Ohio State University Outstanding Alumnus for College Personnel Award.
Kathleen Halstead has been an equally dedicated partner in service, known for her tireless volunteerism and strong advocacy for students and the College. Together, the Halsteads worked to deepen connections between Brockport, its students, and the surrounding community. Mrs. Halstead’s many contributions were formally recognized in 2014 when she received the Brockport Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Through their shared professional and personal commitments, Dr. and Mrs. Halstead exemplify leadership in higher education grounded in service, access, and student-centered values. Their legacy continues to reflect a belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of investing in student success and community engagement.
