Richard J. and Joan S. Fenton Scholarship

Richard J. and Joan S. Fenton Scholarship

Emeritus professor Dr. Richard Fenton and Mrs. Joan Fenton established the Richard J. and Joan S. Fenton scholarship at SUNY Brockport to support an undergraduate student who is planning a career in education.

Dr. and Mrs. Fenton were both teachers. Mrs. Fenton taught at all levels of the public school system. Now retired, she spent the greatest part of her career as a reading specialist in a middle school setting. She earned her master’s degree and her advanced certificate from the College in 1979. In addition to her education career, she is an active community volunteer and serves on the Board of Directors of the Brockport Alumni Association.

Dr. Fenton came to Brockport in 1968 after serving as a U.S. Army captain during the Vietnam Era. He taught economics and was instrumental in establishing the Alternate College, predecessor to today’s Delta College. Dr. Fenton is a member of the Brockport Foundation Board of Directors.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Fenton hope receiving this scholarship will encourage the student recipient to attend graduate school after receiving their Brockport degree with a goal of becoming a teacher.

Students who qualify for the Richard J. and Joan S. Fenton Scholarship will enter their junior or senior year as a full-time student in the semester after selection and have one full academic year of study at Brockport remaining. They must have an overall Brockport GPA of 3.25 when they apply, and they must possess interest in a career in education while demonstrating evidence of a commitment to community service.

First preference for this scholarship will go to a graduate of Brockport High School who is matriculated in the School of Business and Management and/or Delta College with a career goal of teaching at a public school or an institution of higher education. Although financial need is not a requirement, if the three final applicants are equally qualified, the student with the greatest financial need based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and guidance from the Financial Aid office will receive this scholarship.
