Richard L. and Richard P. Canuteson Award

The family of Dr. Richard L. Canuteson, emeritus professor of education, established a scholarship at SUNY Brockport in his memory in 1979. His son and namesake, Richard P. Canuteson, was added to the award’s title in 2001 to recognize love of learning and support for education.

From 1948 to 1969, Dr. Canuteson was a member of the education faculty, teaching in the graduate program and leading the graduate symposium in curriculum and development. A native of Wisconsin, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He taught in several school districts, including Penn Yan, while studying for his doctoral degree, which he earned from Michigan State University in 1948.

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Canuteson wrote an account of the first permanent settlement of Norwegians in the United States at Kendall that was published by the Norwegian-American Historical Association in its February 1953 volume of studies. He passed away in 1977.

Richard P. Canuteson, his son, embarked on a career in public service after attending Hamilton College, where he graduated in 1956. He was the assistant director of Administration in the New York State Insurance Department, now the Department of Financial Services. He retired in 1996 and now lives in Gloversville, NY,

Applicants for the Richard L. and Richard P. Canuteson Award should be junior-year students who apply for the award for their senior-year studies at Brockport. Applicants also must be registered in the Childhood Inclusive Education Certification Program, have a good-to-excellent GPA, have completed or plan to enroll in student teaching, and demonstrate some financial need.
