Robert R. Griswold History Award

Robert R. Griswold History Award

The colleagues and friends of Dr. Robert R. Griswold at SUNY Brockport honored his memory with a scholarship in his name that recognizes an outstanding junior or senior student in the Department of History at the college.

Dr. Griswold was a professor of history at Brockport from 1958 to 1974. He fostered an interdisciplinary approach to history, incorporating a number of social sciences into his approach. His work focused on history from a non-western world perspective, and he taught classes in or led workshops on such topics as an in-depth look at India or problems in sub-Saharan Africa.

He was a member of the Collegiate Council for the United Nations and helped plan a state-sponsored, nine-college conference on the non-western world in the 1960s. He traveled widely in Africa and had an extensive slide collection that he used in his lectures. In the early 1960s, he introduced African Studies to the history curriculum.

When applying for the Robert R. Griswold History Award, applicants must have at least 12 academic hours in history, six of which must be taken at Brockport. They can apply as sophomores or juniors but must be in their junior or senior years when the award is made. They must have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a GPA of 3.5 in their history courses.
