Ruth Donahue Maurer '53 Scholarship

Ruth Donahue Maurer '53 Scholarship

Mr. James Maurer established the Ruth Donahue Maurer ’53 Scholarship at SUNY Brockport to honor his late wife, her love of Brockport, and her teaching career in the Greece Central School District by recognizing an outstanding English major who is pursuing a teaching career.

Mrs. Maurer began teaching after graduation in Medina, then with the Rochester City School District, before joining the teaching staff of the Greece Central School District. She earned a master’s degree in education in 1957. She taught with the Greece schools for 33 years before retiring in 1985.

Outside the classroom, she was an athlete and an active community volunteer. She was a member of several tennis clubs, participated in fitness workouts, and was an avid golfer. She was a member of Victor Hills Golf Club, and she was club champion in her class in 1992 and 1993.

As a volunteer, she was a cataloguer, docent, docent trainer, and researcher with the George Eastman Museum. She also volunteered with the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum, Rochester Friendly Home, the Catholic Family Center STAR Program, the Visiting Nurse Service, and Meals on Wheels.

To be eligible for the Ruth Donahue Maurer ’53 Scholarship, applicants must be undergraduate English majors who have been accepted into the teacher certification program. They must have at least two semesters of study remaining at Brockport, demonstrate academic excellence, and exhibit a commitment to a career in teaching.
