Samuel, Elizabeth and Dr. Francis J. Manno Award
Dr. Francis J. Manno, professor in the Department of History at SUNY Brockport, established a scholarship in memory of his parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Manno, to recognize an outstanding undergraduate student at the college. When Dr. Manno passed away in 1998, his brother Joseph Manno, PhD, added Dr. Francis Manno’s name to the scholarship.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dr. Manno served during World War II on ships patrolling the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He joined the Brockport faculty in 1963 and was a member of the Department of History until his retirement in 1983.
For several summers during his time at Brockport, Dr. Manno took groups of students to Mexico for eight-week sessions to study the history and culture of the country. He researched and wrote on aspects of Mexican history. His research and book reviews were published in such publications as the Hispanic American Historical Review and The Nation’s Cities.
The Class of 1968 listed Dr. Manno as their favorite faculty member.
