Susan Kwas Maloney '67 Scholarship

Susan Kwas Maloney '67 Scholarship

Recognizing that student teaching requires full-time focus, Susan Kwas Maloney ’67 established a scholarship in her name to support two undergraduate students annually who are enrolled in the student-teaching component of the Childhood Inclusive Certification Program. The scholarship honors the memory of her parents, Margaret Henrici Kwas and John Thomas Kwas.

After graduating from Brockport, Mrs. Maloney began her career in education on Long Island teaching children and adults with multiple special needs. She moved into the position of Director of Special Education for the Newburgh (NY) Enlarged City School District in 1978. In 1984, she joined the faculty of Mount St. Mary College first as a supervisor of student teachers, and two years later as Coordinator of Student Teaching for undergraduate and graduate students at the college.

She has served on a number of boards, including those of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Auxiliary, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley, and the Amos and Sarah Holden Home.

From 2001 to 2009, she was a trustee of Mount St. Mary College. She and her husband also co-chaired a successful capital campaign that funded the completion of the college’s Math, Science, and Technology Center. In 2017, the couple received the Mount St. Mary’s College Community Service Award for their decades of local service, commitment to education, and dedication to the Hudson Valley.

Applicants for the Susan Kwas Maloney ’67 Scholarship must be enrolled in the Childhood Inclusive Certification Program and have a definite student teaching assignment during the semester following selection.
