Ted Bondi '51 Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends of Theodore (Ted) Bondi ’51 created a scholarship in his memory to recognize an outstanding junior or senior student majoring in one of the programs offered by the Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education at SUNY Brockport.

During his years as a Brockport student, from 1947 to 1951, Mr. Bondi was a four-year All-American soccer player as goalkeeper. He was also a member of the basketball, baseball, and swimming teams. In 1952, he earned his master’s degree in education at the University of North Carolina.

After his graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, returning to his hometown of Geneseo where he taught science and then physical education at Geneseo High School. He also served as the school’s basketball coach from 1954 to 1971, winning NYSPHSAA Section V titles in 1961 and 1971, and as the Geneseo Central School District’s Athletic Director.

Mr. Bondi earned his Advanced Certificate in Education from Brockport in 1957. In addition to his coaching and administrative responsibilities at Geneseo, he worked with Section V of the NYSPHSAA, the organization that sanctions high school sports in New York. Section V encompasses 12 counties, including Monroe where Brockport is located, serving as a member of the Section V Central Committee for 27 years.

In 1985, Mr. Bondi was inducted into the inaugural class of the Golden Eagle Hall of Fame, and in 2006, he was inducted into the Brockport Hall of Heritage. He received recognition for his work as a coach and an administrator at the local section and state levels. He was inducted into the Section V Executive Hall of Fame and the NYS Public High School Executive Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2018, he was inducted into the NYS Administrator Hall of Fame.

Active in his community outside sports, he served as a volunteer fireman for 35 years, was a charter member of the Geneseo Warplane Museum, and served on the parish council for his church. He also served as president of the Geneseo Blue Knights and was a fundraiser for the American Red Cross. Mr. Bondi passed away in 2010.
