The Marjorie H. Coyle Nursing Education Scholarship

The Marjorie H. Coyle Nursing Education Scholarship

The Marjorie H. Coyle Nursing Education Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in the SUNY Brockport Department of Nursing.

Mr. Peter Coyle ’86 and Mrs. Amanda Coyle ’86/’02 established this scholarship in memory of his mother who passed away in April 2015.

Marjorie Coyle enjoyed a life-long nursing career, beginning with her first position caring for injured soldiers during World War II. She raised nine children and was matriarch of a large, multi-generational family with 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She worked as a bedside nurse until she was in her 70s, only to return to the profession as a volunteer hospice nurse until she was well into her 80s. She was dedicated to caring for others, in her family, her professional career, and her numerous volunteer roles. Her family remembers her quiet strength, practical approach to life, and unflappable professional demeanor, resulting from her belief that she had spent her life with purpose and meaning.

Her son Peter Coyle majored in computer science at Brockport, and her daughter-in-law Amanda Coyle majored in communication before returning to the College to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2002.

To qualify for the Marjorie H. Coyle Scholarship, applicants must be accepted into the Department of Nursing as a nursing major studying in the traditional nursing program, exhibit academic excellence, and demonstrate the potential for excellence in the career of nursing.
