The Warren H. and Mary Ann Hewes Scholarship

Mr. Warren ’57 and Mrs. Mary Ann Hewes established a scholarship in their names to encourage outstanding students from the Greece Central School District who are preparing for careers in education with an emphasis in literacy. The scholarship recognizes a promising student at SUNY Brockport who is preparing to teach at the elementary grade level.

Mr. Hewes earned his master’s degree in education at Brockport in 1957 and dedicated his life to providing quality education for children. He was a teacher and administrator in the Greece Central School District for 36 years. He taught at the Kirk Road School, and then served as principal at the Hoover Drive School and the Autumn Lane School, where he was the school’s first principal. He guided numerous pre-service and in-service teachers, and he taught and inspired many students from Brockport as well. Mr. Hewes retired in 1983 and passed away in 2019.

For more than 30 years, Mrs. Hewes working in the banking industry, retiring as a vice-president for Central Trust Bank in 1980.

After their retirements, Mr. and Mrs. Hewes were active participants at Brockport, attending Mornings with the Professors and theatre productions. They were also members of Friends of Brockport Dance.

Qualified applicants for the Warren H. and Mary Ann Hewes Scholarship must be undergraduate students who have graduated from high school within the five years prior to application and must be accepted into the Childhood Inclusive Teacher Certification program in the Department of Education and Human Development.

Applicants also must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching literacy in the elementary classroom and submit an essay, not to exceed two pages, on the applicant’s commitment to teaching experiences with children, especially in literacy education and/or their goals in this area. Preference will go to a graduate of the Greece Central School District or to a current resident of the Town of Greece, NY. Secondary preference will go to a graduate of Byron-Bergen or Spencerport High Schools.
