Thelma A. Quicke Scholarship
A 1936 graduate of the Brockport Normal School in teacher certification, Dr. Quick earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work at Carnegie Mellon. She went on to do her doctoral and post-doctoral work in psychiatric sequences at Duke and Columbia Universities.
Dr. Quicke enjoyed a long and varied career in social services, beginning at the Muskegon (MI) Children’s Home where she developed programs for displaced children. She had successively more responsible roles with the Family and Children’s Agency in Bridgeport, CT; the Aging and Home Care Agency in Akron, OH; and the Family and Children’s Services in Blair County, PA.
In 1968, she returned to her native city, Rochester, NY, where she served as a mental health consultant with the Monroe County Department of Mental Health until 1983. At that time, she established a consulting practice specializing in services for dementia, grief, and intergenerational distress for agencies and practitioners. Dr. Quicke passed away in 2015
She established her scholarship to acknowledge the importance of teachers in society through support for an outstanding student who plans a teaching career. The scholarship recognizes a student who displays the potential for excellence in education.
Applicants qualified for the Thelma A. Quicke Scholarship will be accepted into the teacher certification program at the undergraduate level, will demonstrate significant involvement in the community and schools, and will exhibit academic proficiency as defined by the Department of Education and Human Development Selection Committee.
