Tom and Jinny Hulshoff Mulvey PE Scholarship
Tom and Virginia (Jinny) Hulshoff ’68 Mulvey established a scholarship at SUNY Brockport to recognize a passionate and dedicated current student in the Physical Education Teacher Education program at the college.
At Brockport, Mrs. Mulvey participated in campus activities, including student government and residence life. She also served as a Resident Advisor. As a student, she majored in Health and Physical Education, a dual major at that time. Requirements then meant she had to take a class in every sport or activity offered by the physical education department, resulting in her attending many Saturday sessions to get them all in.
Wanting to teach physical education for as long as she can remember, Mrs. Mulvey returned to her Lockport, NY, hometown after her Brockport graduation. She married Tom, her high school sweetheart, and the couple began teaching in the Lockport City School District. For six years, she taught in the same junior high that she attended before taking time off for her family. She taught at the elementary level when she returned to work, and her husband became an elementary school principal.
In teaching physical education at the elementary level, Mrs. Mulvey coordinated her instruction with the curriculum from the classrooms. She enjoyed reinforcing math, science, and other academic concepts through physical education activities.
Applicants qualified for the Tom and Jinny Hulshoff Mulvey PE Scholarship can be rising junior or senior, or graduate students enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Education program at SUNY Brockport. Applicants also must demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm, and passion for a career in physical education as determined by the selection committee.
