W. Raymond Duncan Alumni Scholarship Fund
The Department of Political Science established the W. Raymond Duncan Scholarship to honor Dr. Duncan, Emeritus Distinguished Teaching Professor of Political Science, who taught at SUNY Brockport from 1968 to 2002. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student in the Political Science and International Studies department.
Dr. Duncan was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1959 to 1961 in counter-intelligence in Germany. He joined the Brockport political science faculty in 1968.
In 1978, Dr. Duncan established a new program in global studies with a grant from the U.S. Office of Education. He was recognized for his multi-disciplinary approach to global studies. He was also recognized for bringing elected officials from all parties and viewpoints to speak to students on leadership.
Known as a teacher, entertainer and storyteller, The Stylus reports in 1978 that there was often standing room only at his lectures. Dr. Duncan served as a scholar in residence for the CIA in 1985, and later that year participated in the Peace Studies Conference at Brockport. He also served in higher education posts in Germany and at the University of Malaysia.
Dr. Duncan began using inter-active teaching methods in 1993, in which he encouraged student involvement in identifying, solving, and analyzing problems.
Applicants for the W. Raymond Duncan Alumni Scholarship must meet academic and public service criteria established by the Department of Political Science and International Studies selection committee.
