Warren Morgan Memorial Award in English

Friends and colleagues of Dr. Warren M. Morgan established this award to recognize an outstanding English major during their senior year at SUNY Brockport. Dr. Morgan was a professor of English at Brockport from 1942 until he passed away at the beginning of the academic year in 1962.

He earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin, and he was known for telling his students that Thomas Wolfe and Ernest Hemingway were the two greatest American authors. He maintained a collection of newspapers from historic events, such as the sinking of the Titanic, the end of World War I, and Lindberg’s flight across the Atlantic, and for his rare books, including a 16th century volume on geography with hand-painted maps.

During his first summer at Brockport, Dr. Morgan took a job with a defense plant to support the war effort. At Brockport, he served as an advisor to The Stylus, and he was a consultant to public school districts. Well-known and popular in the Brockport college community, he received a written tribute to his contributions to the campus from Dr. Gordon, dean of the college, at his passing.

The Warren Morgan Memorial Award acknowledges an exceptional senior-year student majoring in English, who has demonstrated high achievement in the Department of English.
