Wilbur H. Adriance Scholarship
Amy Jo Adriance Obes established a scholarship at SUNY Brockport in memory of her father Wilbur H. Adriance, who taught physical education at the Campus School. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student majoring in Physical Education Teacher Education.
Mr. Adriance graduated from the Savage School of Physical Education in New York City in 1933. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from the former Arnold College, Milford, CT, in 1941. He earned his master’s degree from Syracuse University in 1947.
Before taking a position as instructor at the Brockport Campus School in 1949, Mr. Adriance taught physical education at the elementary school level in Corning and Hillsdale, NY, and coached both basketball and football in those districts. He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945.
He successfully taught as an instructor of physical education at the campus school from 1949 to 1955, when he was promoted to assistant professor. He served as an assistant football coach at the college, where he was responsible for the boys’ physical education program until he passed away in 1964. His daughter was seven years old at the time of his passing.
The Wilbur H. Adriance Scholarship recognizes an exceptional student in the Physical Education Teacher Education Program at Brockport who has a GPA of 3.0 or better and is a sophomore or junior when selected. Applicants also must demonstrate a commitment to a career in teaching physical education as well as exhibit professional promise along with the skills and abilities required to become a successful teacher and/or coach as determined by the Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Scholarship Selection Committee.
