Marion R. Sortore Award

This scholarship recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching, with exceptional skill in working with students in elementary education. Eligible students must demonstrate exceptional skill in working with elementary students and exhibit commitment to education as indicated by having the support of the education professionals overseeing their education. This fund was established to honor the memory of Marion R. Sortore and the commitment she made to education as an excellent, “primary level demonstration” / supervising teacher in SUNY Brockport’s Campus School, student teacher supervisor in off-campus assignments, and Associate Professor of Education. She established the first teaching center in Hilton, NY in 1968 and served the College from 1944-1969.

The financial assistance is in the form of a check if the recipient is a graduate of SUNY Brockport before the fall semester of the award period. If the recipient is not a graduate by the start of the fall semester of the award period, the financial assistance will be credited to the recipient’s bill during the semester(s) of the award period and the student must use this award for educational expenses at the College.
