Eric M. Steel Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize, encourage and assist an entering freshman or transfer student at The College at Brockport who has earned an excellent academic record, especially in English and/ or French language studies and demonstrates a love of learning. This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Steel, professor of French and English from 1943 to 1974, and founding chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature from 1964 to 1969. Dr. Steel was a pioneer among SUNY professors in developing and offering credit-bearing programs of international study for undergraduate and graduate students throughout the SUNY system. Dr. Steel’s first credit-bearing course, including an eight-week guided European travel/study program, was in 1953.

Eligible students must

  1. Be an entering full-time freshman or transfer student at SUNY Brockport.
  2. Have earned an excellent academic record, especially in French language studies and/or English.
  3. Demonstrate excellent potential for success in college.

This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.

Incoming students are considered for scholarships based on their admissions application – they should not apply through the scholarship portal. For best consideration, students are encouraged to submit their application by February 15th.
