NYS Federation of Home Bureaus Scholarship in Honor of Irene Silco Weirich

This fund was established by the NYS Federation of Home Bureaus to recognize an outstanding student in the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies who has demonstrated commitment and potential for excellence in recreation and leisure programs, or in the Department of Healthcare Studies for exemplary work in Alcohol & Substance Abuse Education.

Irene Sileo Weirich, an active leader in the New York State Federation of Home Bureaus, taught elementary school and later joined the faculty at SUNY Brockport, before retiring in the mid-1980s. She served as Chapter Chairman, Western District Chairperson and the 1998-2000 State President for the NYS Federation, and she represented the organization at the re-enactment of placing the plaque at the Peace Bridge in June 2001. The 97th NYS Federation scholarship in her honor was presented to Dr. David Jewell of Brockport’s Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies during the Federation’s 2002 state-wide annual meeting.

Eligible students must

  1. Be accepted at SUNY Brockport, in the Department of Healthcare Studies, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies Program at either the undergraduate or graduate level
  2. Demonstrate academic excellence as judged by the NYS Federation of Home Bureaus in Honor of Irene Sileo Weirich selection committee and an academic standing of 2.85 or better.
  3. Reside in one of the New York state counties where the NYS Federation of Home Bureaus, Inc., has organized chapters.
  4. Be willing to meet in person with representative(s) from the NYS Federation of Home Bureaus scholarship selection committee for an in-depth interview.

This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.
