MHB Series: Fred Dean Scholarship

Fred Dean, one of nine siblings, and fifth son of Rev. Fred Dean and Mrs. Agnes St. Clair Dean, spent his formative years in the town of Greece, attending Greece Central School District #1. While employed at Eastman Kodak Co., Fred also attended SUNY Brockport to obtain his undergraduate degree in Education. His 32-year career in Greece includes teaching at West Ridge School and as Principal of Paddy Hill and English Village Elementary Schools. He is the first Greece Central School District graduate to become an administrator in that district. Fred and his wife. Lorraine have 6 children – Barbara, Claire, Herbert, Jon, Thomas and Timothy.

As an Elementary School Principal, Fred recognized the reciprocal benefits for Brockport teacher candidates and for the children and faculties of his school. English Village School became a model of the Greece/SUNY Brockport educational partnership/ collaboration.

In his leadership role with Peg Browne, Clinical Professor and founder of the Greece/Brockport Teaching Center partnership in the 1970’s and the 1980’s, Fred appreciated the impact this collaborative program had on children, teachers, administrators and College students in the Greece schools. On the occasion of Peg’s retirement from the College in 1985, Fred led his colleagues, school district leaders, George Anderson, Richard Edgett, and others, to establish the Marguerite Hare Browne Professional Education Awards to honor Peg for her many contributions to the district, the college and education.
