MHB Series: Marguerite Hare Browne High School Senior Scholarship

Friends and colleagues of Marguerite “Peg” Hare Browne within the Greece Central School District and SUNY Brockport delivered funds to the State University College at Brockport Foundation, Inc. in 1983 to establish the Marguerite Hare Browne Professional Education Awards & Scholarships program in honor of Peg. It recognizes her many contributions to education and her leadership role in the development of the SUNY Brockport/Greece Teaching Center in 1969, a collaborative program within the Department of Education & Human Development, serving both communities of scholars.

Mrs. Browne, a 1944 Brockport alumna and member of the Department of Education and Human Development from 1949 to 1985 and associate professor of education emeriti, was a clinical professor and founder of the SUNY Brockport/Greece Central Teaching Center in 1969. Upon her retirement, Peg served as the Brockport Foundation, Inc. Director of Special Projects and Emeriti. Affairs until 1992. She is a member of the Brockport Alumni Association Hall of Heritage.

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize, encourage, and assist an outstanding graduating senior in a public high school preparing for a career in education at SUNY Brockport during their four years of undergraduate study.

The Marguerite Hare Browne High School Senior Scholarship is the first scholarship in a a four-year sequenced scholarship package. The recipient may receive continued support for their second, third, and fourth year of study if eligibility is maintained.

Eligible students must

  1. Be a graduating high school senior from a NYS public high school.
  2. Be accepted as a full-time freshman at SUNY Brockport with the intent to enroll in any teacher certification program.
  3. Demonstrate academic excellence, high potential for success in the education profession, and exemplary leadership traits as demonstrated through a satisfactory record of extracurricular activities and volunteerism as judged by the selection committee.
  4. Demonstrate commitment to a career in education as judged by the selection committee.
  5. Be recommended for this award by the student’s school counselor and two other professional staff members in the student’s school.

This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.

Incoming students are considered for scholarships based on their admissions application – they should not apply through the scholarship portal. For best consideration, students are encouraged to submit their application by February 15th.
