Ruth A. Garis Scholarship
This fund was established in honor of Dr. Ruth A. Garis, associate professor of physical education and sport at SUNY Brockport from 1965 until her retirement in 1985. Dr. Garis served as Department Chair during an important transition from the Department of Physical Education for Women to a joint Department with a new curriculum that received national attention. Throughout her career she remained committed to preparing outstanding teachers of physical education who were skilled performers as well as knowledgeable teachers. She developed and taught performance courses from beginning to advanced in Backpacking, Rock Climbing, and Alpine Skiing, and the graduate program in physical education. After retirement she supervised physical education student teachers for five years on a part-time basis.
The Ruth A. Garis Scholarship recognizes a physical education major with junior status pursuing teacher certification in physical education. The scholarship recognizes demonstrated excellence in the performance of an outdoor activity including, but not limited to backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, alpine/cross country skiing, snowboarding, golf and the game of soccer.
Eligible students must
- Be a junior pursuing teacher certification in physical education.
- Possess an overall GPA of 3.25 or better at Brockport.
- Demonstrate excellence in performance in an outdoor activity including, but not limited to backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, alpine/cross country skiing, snowboarding, golf and the game of soccer.
This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.
