Coach John Feeney ’76 Scholarship

John Feeney served as the gymnastics coach for 22 years from 1999 to 2021 and inspired his gymnasts to an unprecedented run of success at SUNY Brockport.

The Father of Brockport Gymnastics is a 1976 graduate of the University who began his coaching career at the high school and club level in the Rochester, NY area. From 1983 to 1990, he was the girls’ coach for the Greece Central School District and spent three years as head gymnastics coach at Hilton High School. From 1988 to 1993, and then again from 1998 to 1999, Feeney served as the Chair of the Monroe County high School Gymnastics League and from 1990 through 1998, was the Section V Gymnastics Team Coach for the NYS Public High School Athletic League State Meet.

During his tenure at SUNY Brockport, Coach Feeney led the team to two NCGA National Championship wins in 2012 and 2019, and nine regional wins with a total of 212 career dual meet victories. He was named NCGA National Coach of the Year in 2004, 2010, 2012 and has coached 130 All American athletes as a testament to his craft. While coaching at SUNY Brockport he also served as a lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education specializing in Strength & Conditioning, Coaching and Gymnastics.

As one always dedicated to his student athletes, Coach Feeney stated, “One big thing I can say is that my door was always open for my team. I’m grateful for these kids. When I think about all of our accomplishments, I would have to say I’m most proud of the e-mails and phone calls I get to this day from our former student-athletes. They say thank you. They tell me how Brockport and the gymnastics program helped to make them into the person they are today. I’m so proud to have played a role in helping our student-athletes grow.”

Eligible students must

  1. Be enrolled in any major within the Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
  2. Demonstrate academic excellence with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and as judged by the selection committee.

This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.
