Dr. George W. Cornell

Dr. George W. Cornell

Family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Cornell established a scholarship in his name after his retirement in 1985 to honor his outstanding service to Brockport during his 16 years as Library Director and to affirm the importance of student assistants to successful library operation.

Dr. Cornell joined the library staff as Library Director in 1969. Prior to Brockport he served as the Technical Services Librarian at Antioch College. He earned his PhD from the Ohio State University and served in the United States Army as a Special Staff Officer with the 63rd Infantry Division from 1942-1946.

As Library Director, he was involved in the library’s move from the Rakov Center for Student Services to its current location. Dr. Cornell and his wife, Barbara, were also actively involved in the Brockport community and attended many college functions together. The George W. Cornell Library Service and Administration Award honors his dedication to the library and his love for the college community by recognizing accomplished students employed by the library.
