Pauline M. Haynes Music Award
The Pauline M. Haynes Music Award honors the career of Ms. Haynes who taught at SUNY Brockport from 1925 to 1966, by recognizing a student of exceptional talents, high achievement, and performance ability in voice, piano, or a stringed instrument.
A native of Plattsburg, Ms. Haynes graduated from Skidmore College in 1922. She taught in Massena, NY, and Princeton, NJ, before joining the Brockport faculty in 1925 as associate professor of music. After her first year, she became chair of the Department of Music. In 1935, she earned her master’s degree from Columbia University.
At Brockport, she added several new classes to the music curriculum, including opera appreciation, and she directed the college chorus. She also directed the orchestra and conducted the music for special assemblies and productions.
When she retired in 1966, Ms. Haynes received the professor emerita distinction. She passed away in 1989.
Qualified applicants for the Pauline M. Haynes Music Award have completed at least one full year at Brockport and will become a junior or senior student in the academic year following receipt of the award. Candidates also must demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, exceptional talent and performance ability in voice, piano, or a stringed instrument, and potential for continuing study in music.
