Peter and Marguerite Kane Endowed Graduate Student Scholarship in Communication

Dr. Peter Kane and Mrs. Marguerite Kane established and endowed their scholarship to support graduate education in communication at SUNY Brockport by recognizing an outstanding student in the program.

Dr. Kane joined the Brockport faculty in 1968 to create the College’s graduate program in communication. A specialist in media law, freedom of expression, and rhetorical criticism, he began a program built around a common core of communication principles. Dr. Kane retired in 1995.

He began his professional career at Occidental College and earned his doctorate at Purdue University, then joined the faculty at St. Joseph’s (IN) College before coming to Brockport.

Dr. Kane is the author of Errors, Lies & Libel published in 1992 and three other books. He is the author or co-author of number journal articles, such as “Official Secrets and the Right to Know,” published in Philosophic Exchange. In his retirement, he has continued to contribute to scholarly publications.

Mrs. Kane became acquainted with the College through the partnership between the Department of Education and Human Services and the Escola Americana in Rio de Janeiro. She joined the faculty at Genesee Community College and received two Chancellor’s Awards for her teaching before she retired.

Applicants qualified for the Peter and Marguerite Kane Endowed Graduate Student Scholarship in Communication have been accepted into the Communication program at the graduate level and demonstrate the potential for excellence in a career in the discipline. They must also demonstrate financial need as determined by the department’s faculty.

Scholarships
