Richard J. and Joan S. Fenton

A Legacy of Education, Service, and Student Success

Dr. Richard J. Fenton and Mrs. Joan S. Fenton exemplify the profound impact that dedicated educators and committed community members can have on generations of students. Their lives and philanthropy reflect a shared belief in the transformative power of education and a deep commitment to helping others achieve their fullest potential.

Richard and Joan first met as students and built a lifelong partnership rooted in family, education, and service. Each pursued distinguished careers in education with Richard as a professor of economics at SUNY Brockport, and Joan as a teacher and reading specialist in the Brockport Central School District. Joan graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1979 with a master’s degree and advanced certificate in literacy education.

Richard joined the SUNY Brockport faculty in 1968, following his service as a U.S. Army captain during the Vietnam War era. At Brockport, he became a respected teacher and academic leader, helping to develop innovative programs such as the Alternative College, a predecessor to Delta College, while championing undergraduate education. Joan devoted her career to supporting student learning at all levels, with a particular focus on literacy, and continued her service through volunteer leadership and community engagement. Together, they have remained deeply invested in the Brockport community by supporting schools, students, and initiatives that strengthen both the University and the broader region. At SUNY Brockport, Richard served on the Brockport Foundation Board of Directors, while Joan served on the Board of Directors for the Brockport Alumni Association.

Beyond their philanthropic support of the University, Richard and Joan have contributed extensively to the local community through leadership and volunteerism. Richard was a founding member of the Building Excellence in Students Today (BEST) in Brockport Foundation, supporting initiatives that expand educational opportunities for students. Joan has served as a trustee of the organization and has held numerous leadership roles supporting schools and alumni engagement.

They have also been active in a variety of partnerships and initiatives that strengthen connections between the College and the community, including service with the Friends of Drake Memorial Library and participation on civic and educational boards and committees. Their contributions have been recognized with the James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award, honoring their service to students, education, and the Brockport community, as well as the Jeanette D’Agostino Banker Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes individuals who demonstrate long-standing commitment to the mission of the Brockport Foundation through excellence in volunteer service, dedication to enhancing public awareness, and advancing the mission of the University.

The Fentons’ philanthropy reflects a lifelong commitment to education, equity, and community. Their endowed scholarships continue to support SUNY Brockport students each year by helping to remove barriers, recognize achievement, and inspire future generations of leaders and educators.
Through their generosity and example, Richard and Joan Fenton have created a lasting legacy that continues to inspire students, strengthen the institution, and enrich the Brockport community for years to come.
