Sherwin G. Swartout Memorial Award

Sherwin G. Swartout Memorial Award

The Sherwin G. Swartout Memorial Award honors Dr. Swartout, a faculty member for 30 years, by recognizing an outstanding undergraduate student at SUNY Brockport employed in the college’s Information Technology Support Services. The late Mrs. Eileen Swartout ’63 established this award in his memory.

Dr. Swartout was a professor and a national authority on educational technology communications and technology. He served as director of audio-visual education beginning in 1952, pioneered the use of instructional television, and helped evaluate the efficacy of a campus radio station. He was active within SUNY, working with colleagues at Buffalo, Fredonia, Geneseo, and Oswego on the possibility of sharing content in educational courses.

He wrote articles and guides on audio-visual education in New York State, and he led workshops on incorporating audio-visual materials into curriculum planning for education association meetings.

Applicants who qualify for the Sherwin G. Swartout Memorial Award are undergraduate students who must have worked for Information Technology Support Services for at least six months before applying. They also must have a GPA of at least 2.5, have contributed to the mission of Information Technology support, and have demonstrated initiative, reliability, and above-average performance.
