William A. Stebbins Scholarship in Health Science
Friends and colleges of Dr. William A. Stebbins established this award in his name to honor his commitment to health education. It recognizes an outstanding student in the Public Health program at SUNY Brockport.
Dr. Stebbins earned his doctoral degree from New York University. He was a secondary school teacher and coach at several New York school districts and also taught at SUNY Oswego. He served in the U. S. Army in the Medical Corps during World War II.
After his service, he joined the faculty at Brockport in 1946 as a professor and chair of health and physical education until 1968 when the program was reorganized. He then served as a professor of health science until he retired in 1971. Dr. Stebbins passed away in 1996.
Students who qualify for the William Stebbins Scholarship in Health Sciences must be undergraduates enrolled in the Public Health program. They must intend to become certified health education specialists, qualified to teach health education in elementary or secondary classrooms or serve as a health educator in a community-based agency. Applicants also must demonstrate outstanding academic ability as evidenced by a GPA of at least 2.5, leadership qualities, and the potential for success in the health education profession.
