Warren H. '57 and Mary Ann Hewes Scholarship

Originally, this scholarship recognized and encouraged outstanding students from the Greece Central School District preparing for careers in education with an emphasis in literacy. It was the intention of the Hewes family to recognize students in who are studying to be literacy specialists in SUNY Brockport’s teacher education program. Both Warren and Mary Ann Hewes were greatly influenced by Dr. Frances “Fran” Moroney Whited, a beloved educator, who was a founder of the Reading Teacher Master’s Program, the forerunner of the current Literacy Program.

Mr. Hewes was a teacher and administrator in the Greece Central School District for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He served the district as a Principal at both the Hoover Drive and Autumn Lane schools (serving as the first principal when Autumn Lane opened in 1961) as well as a teacher at the Kirk Road School. He dedicated his life to providing quality education for children. As a major part of his life’s work, he guided numerous pre-service and in-service teachers to become outstanding educators. His goal was to raise the level of instruction for children and, in the elementary school setting; he taught and inspired many students from SUNY Brockport. Mr. Hewes earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his Master’s Degree from SUNY Brockport.

Mrs. Hewes, for more than 30 years, worked in the banking industry, retiring in 1980 as the Vice President for Central Trust Bank (now M & T).

For more than 25 years Mr. & Mrs. Hewes were actively involved in and supporters of activities at SUNY Brockport. They were regular participants at ‘Morning with the Professors’, they were active supporters of the Friends of Brockport Dance and attended annual theatrical productions. Mr. & Mrs. Hewes made support of and participation in educational endeavors a major part of their life.

Eligible students must

  1. Be accepted for admission and enroll at SUNY Brockport into the Literacy Education Program (MSEd) or any other future Literacy Education Programs at the graduate level.
  2. Demonstrate academic excellence by possessing a 3.0 grade point average and as judged by the selection committee.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to and the potential for excellence in the career of education as judged by the selection committee.

This scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s bill in the form of a non-tuition educational expense grant. It must be used for educational expenses and may not be received as cash.

Incoming students are considered for scholarships based on their admissions application – they should not apply through the scholarship portal. For best consideration, students are encouraged to submit their application by February 15th.
